Crown
Jangley garage rockers with a love of groove delivering layers of melodic niuance, heavy rythmns and a touch of trash.

Originally Henry Mangkusasono (Vocals and Guitar/Bass), Owen Smith (Guitar/Bass) and Shiro (drums), Crown were referred to The Granny for a recording project. This project was started, but due to unexpected technical failures in Granny's studio, only the instrumentation was recorded (to cassette tape, which was the only remaining functional medium). The vocals were never overdubbed (as originally intended) and the band was never charged for the experience.

As it was suddenly a legal necessity for Shiro to depart for his native Japan, The Granny was asked to join as drummer, probably because he was so close at hand and familiar with the material. Arthur Yeung was added soon after as another guitar/bass player, he ended up singing some backups as well. A few more songs were written, but most of the early material written when Shiro was around remained on the setlist.

Shiro was an irreplacable sort, in his honour the song Superhero was unofficially and privately renamed (Shiro the) Superhero after a post pre-recording session drinkfest at a neighborhood bar where Shiro wound up winning the heart of the amazingly beautiful (but stone-cold, due to the dirty old man clientelle no doubt) waitress. She actually approached him with her number already written down on a scrap of paper after he joined those old Greek men for a traditional dance and ended up turning the shit out, impressing all in attendence. McHale, a song which Henry used to say was "about the best basketball player of all time," was also written before Shiro's departure. Note also the most rousing rendition of 1 2 3 4 Henry ever belted out.

All Songs by Mangkusasono/Smith
Recorded live on November 29, 2003 at the Clark Hall Pub in Kingston. The recording of this show had an unusual dual mono format - the output from the house mixer on the right channel and a mic above the audience on the left allows listners to mix the songs as desired using the balance control on their stereos.
